Our climate is changing rapidly due to historical and ongoing human emissions and activities. The consequences manifest themselves sooner and more intensely than anticipated in extreme weather events. The water industry plays a pivotal role in maintaining human health and safety, but is sensitive to such rapid changes because of its slow-moving nature (by design) with long planning horizons and long-lasting infrastructure.
Strengthening the sector’s resilience towards climate change is an essential strategy to deal with these challenges. This refers to the capacity of water systems to anticipate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from disruptions or adverse conditions; while maintaining continuous service or restoring it as quickly as possible.
