This week, Watershare hosted 3 webinars focusing on sewage surveillance from three different regions of the globe; Latin America, the Middle East and Southern Africa.

1. COVID19: Where are we now and how utilities can move beyond the coronavirus – A Latin America Focus

During this webinar, Alejandro Barrio, Director Technological Development, AySA, Argentina spoke about the approach in Buenos Aires and recent results, where they are now and what will happen post-pandemic. Gabriel Anzaldi, Scientific and Technological Development Director at Eurecat – Technology Centre of Catalonia spoke about the experiences from Spain, and finally, Idsart Dijkstra, Water Knowledge Group Manager at KWR spoke about KWR’s experience in the Netherlands and internationally, as well as opportunities for collaboration across Watershare members.

2. Water security: on the eve of COVID19 – Middle East

A MEDRC organized public webinar “Water Security and Covid 19; Learning and Beyond” took place on October 5th, 2020 convening leading water experts from Oman and the Netherlands to exchange on responses to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to drinking water supply and ensuring safe water and wastewater.

Due to Covid pandemic, the event was run online through GoToMeeting software.

3. COVID19: Research outcomes and lessons learned from South Africa

Jay Bhagwan, Executive Manager, Water Use and Waste Management, Water Research Commission South Africa presented on the recent results from the proof of concept study across South African communities. Gertjan Medema, Principal Microbiologist, KWR followed by presenting on developments in his research on sewage surveillance in the Netherlands, and how this could be adapted to non-sewered communities.
