Practicing sports on lime pellets

The Dutch company Henko recently began using lime pellets from the water industry in its artificial turf. Henko specialises in laying and gluing artificial turf, and is active both in and outside of the Netherlands.

The lime pellets are used as filler, and ensure the field’s stability and prevent the artificial grass blades from drooping. Lime pellets have an advantage over sand, which is filler traditionally used: sand attaches itself to the artificial turf, so that the grass becomes less robust and easily damaged. This does not happen with lime pellets. Henko is now using the pellets in five different pilot projects: in football pitches, tennis courts, golf courses and, soon, also on a ski-jump. The initial results are very promising. If the pilots prove to be a success, Henko believes the prospects will be excellent.
