Groundwater models versus time series Analysis: the Terwisscha Case

The influence of the groundwater pumping station of Terwisscha (the Netherlands) on the groundwater levels in the area has been investigated at least a dozen times over the years. But the studies came up with widely differing results.

The time series analysis systematically indicated a much larger influence than did the other studies (Maas, 2012). By focussing on spatial patterns, which is a unique feature of Groundwater Monitor (Von Asmuth, 2012), we were able to explain this phenomenon. In this and many other cases, non-causal correlations between different factors or time series prove to be an important pitfall for the correct interpretation of monitoring data.
