ASR Coastal - Temporal storage and unmixed recovery of freshwater in brackish groundwater

ASR Coastal makes it possible to store freshwater (harvested rainwater, reuse water) in a brackish aquifer and to subsequently reclaim it unmixed for irrigation purposes. ASR Coastal uses multiple, individually controlled filter screens to enable deep injection and shallow recovery of freshwater; recovery levels greatly exceed those achieved by standard ASR techniques.

ASR Coastal has been developed together with greenhouse farmers and technology providers in the Netherlands. Rainwater is harvested from the greenhouse roofs in autumn and winter and recovered in summer when water demand is high. Four commercial system are currently running in the Netherlands, collecting water from 5 to 30 hectares of greenhouse roofs. An additional systems covering 200 hectares is in construction (2018).
