Feb 17, 2022: The Nexus: Building Synergies Across Sectors (Webinar 4a)

Date: 17 February 2022
Time: 13:00-14:00 (CET)

Over the past few years, traditionally water-rich countries, such as the Netherlands and Belgium, have started experiencing freshwater scarcity as a result of prolonged drought. This has urged water users such as water utilities to reflect on their water supply strategy. As part of this reflection, a dialogue among all relevant stakeholders across different sectors (e.g., urban water and agriculture) on water availability and allocation is important to understand sector-specific problems and needs, and consequently to identify opportunities for coordinated water management among them.

The Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) nexus approach investigates the bio-physical, socio-economic and policy interlinkages across nexus sectors and identifies potential synergies and trade-offs for combined coordinated actions. Thinking about water in nexus terms, could help water utilities and other water organizations to better understand interlinkages, problems and needs, and therefore better prepare to negotiate solutions with other sectors’ stakeholders.

By using examples from international projects, this webinar will help the audience improve the understanding of how nexus thinking can help the water sector engage with stakeholders across the nexus sectors to build synergies and manage trade-offs related to water use.

The webinar will be chaired by Stefania Munaretto (KWR). Below is the programme for the webinar.

  • Opening (Stefania Munaretto and Lydia on Whatershare, KWR)
  • Introduction to the topic: The importance of nexus thinking (Floor Brouwer, WUR)
  • Understanding WEFE nexus interlinkages: Lessons learned from the EU funded projects SIM4NEXUS and NEXOGENESIS as a follow up (Janez Sušnik, IHE)
  • Practical example: The case of Latvia and the SIM4NEXUS serious game (Daina Indriksone/ Ingrīda Brēmere, BEF Latvia)
  • Questions and general discussion (Stefania Munaretto, KWR)

The webinar, organised by KWR’s Joint Research Programme of the Dutch and Flemish drinking water sector and Watershare, will take place on 17 February 2022 from 13:00-14:00 (NL local time). The webinar on building synergies across sectors is the forth in the ‘Sharing International Experiences on Water Supply’ webinar series.
