April 11, 2022 Webinar on Digital Water

Date: 11 April 2022
Time: 08:00-09:30 (CEST)

The Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) recently joined the Watershare Community. A keen area of interest for their network of Australian water utilities is the evolution of the digital utility. Work in this area has been progressing at different rates across the country over the past 10 years, with water utilities at differing levels of maturity. Whilst there are some integrated state-based approaches such as the Victorian Digital Asset Strategy, and work done by WSAA on asset nomenclature and digital strategy, there is no fully knit body of knowledge regarding water utility digitalisation. Discussions with Watershare indicate that a significant amount of work has been done in Europe regarding the development of guidelines and technical research to support water utilities’ digital transition. The level of maturity that the digitalisation process has reached throughout the water lifecycle can vary from case to case, from simply incorporating sensors into operational procedures to capture relevant data, visualise trends and raise alerts about anomalous trends or events, to sophisticated, data-science-based approaches and Internet of Things platforms, to data exchange standardisation and analysis that leverage state of the art artificial intelligence techniques to produce predictions/simulations and to support automated and interoperable systems to optimise operations.

WSAA in partnership with Watershare organise a webinar to highlight the work that has been done in Europe in relation to digitalisation of water utilities. It will outline the journey that has occurred, some of the key lessons on interoperability, standardisation, data management and data exchange (e.g., with meteorological services), as well as governance and policy considerations for digital implementation, highlighting the range of information that has been generated through a presentation from the Programme Director at Watershare, Lydia Vamvakeridou-Lyroudia. This presentation will be complemented by a talk from Waternet on their digital journey.
